The Vantaa Station Roof is a 12 000 m² timber gridshell over four platforms of a commuter station north of Helsinki, spanning the tracks without a single column on the platforms. Its 1 860 nodes join two families of curved timber lamellas into a shell that rises from the platform edges to almost eight metres above the rails.

The roof is still under construction, so what you see here is a partial scan: the built half captured weekly by drone and total station, the rest drawn as the design model. Each node is scanned as it is placed and compared with the fabrication model before the next row of lamellas goes up, and any deviation above six millimetres reaches the site team within the hour. Construction is at 58 percent. The 248 sensors installed during the build will stay for the life of the roof, and monitored energy data begins at handover.
